Earth
by Amber Mckenzie
Sun rises
Racing the dawn
Watch the light, see beauty
So many are blind to the life of nature
They don't understand, can't grasp love of nature
Few gifted people understand the rise and fall of life
The sun is life, it feeds plants
They feed animals
But there will be a time when you and I won't see the next dawn
Our life will make way for the next child
Dust from our bones will feed the Earth
Just as our forefathers feed the Mother
Every living creature on this planet is a brother or sister
The wolf, strength
The owl, wisdom
My family, my friends
Would you poison and murder your family and friends
We are killing our Mother, murdering our brothers and sisters
I apologize, Mother for pain I have caused you
Accept me as you own again, my brothers and sisters
Maybe then Man will see the next dawn.

My name is Amber McKenzie. I was born in Whitehorse, Yukon. I was raised in a family where we hunted yet respected each animal as a family member. I am Inuit with other First Nation and Scottish backgrounds. I only hope that this poem changes something in society and maybe the world.
